Moving pigs
You have to meet certain legal requirements if you move pigs within Queensland, or into Queensland, from other states and territories. These requirements help protect our industries from pests and diseases. Read about your National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) requirements.
You should also ask abattoirs about their requirements before sending pigs to an abattoir.
Receiving pigs that have been transported
If you are receiving relocated pigs, you must record the stock movement within 48 hours on the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).
Moving pigs within Queensland
Before you bring pigs into Queensland from other states and territories, you must:
- become a registered biosecurity entity (RBE) to be allocated a property identification code (PIC)
- complete a movement record or PigPass.
Moving pigs into Queensland from another state or territory
Ensure that you have met all Queensland travel requirements for pigs.
Note: You do not require a Queensland certificate of health as of 1 July 2016 when introducing pigs into Queensland. You do have a general biosecurity obligation to prevent or minimise a biosecurity risk.
Moving pigs from Queensland to another state or territory
Contact the state or territory's agriculture department.
Please ensure that you comply with all Queensland travel requirements for pigs when moving through Queensland to get to another state.
Disease requirements
Please note that feeding food scraps to pigs is illegal due to the risk of introducing an exotic disease. All Australian states and territories have laws against feeding swill to pigs.
