Renewing your resource authority
You can now easily access current information on application processing times and other performance measures on the georesources tenure performance dashboard.
About 3 to 6 months before your petroleum, mineral or coal resource authority expires, you will receive an expiry pack containing a range of information to help you lodge a renewal application. All applications need to be submitted within the renewal period (see tables below) and before the authority expires.
How to apply
For details of how to lodge your renewal application, read the Renewal guideline (minerals and coal) (PDF, 279KB) or the Renewal guideline (petroleum) (PDF, 229KB).
You can lodge your application online at MyMinesOnline or use the hard-copy form.

Later development plans and work programs
You will need to submit a later development plan or work program as part of your application.
Compliance obligation for resource authorities
You are required to pay applicable local government rates and charges as a mandatory condition of your mining claim, mining lease, petroleum lease, geothermal lease or greenhouse gas storage lease.
Before starting your renewal application, ensure that you have met the mandatory obligations for your resource authority. This includes paying your local government rates and charges before your resource authority expiry date. The Minister considers non-payment of rates and charges when processing renewal applications.
If this obligation, or existing obligations have not been met:
- for mining claim or mining lease renewals, you must supply justification outlining why they have not been met and how this will be rectified prior to your resource authority expiry date—this this may cause delays or a rejection of your renewal application.
- for petroleum or geothermal lease renewals, you will not be eligible to submit your renewal application.
Notification requirement for mining claims and mining leases
You must notify any landholder within the area of your mining claim, mining lease or associated access land within 5 business days of applying to renew your mining claim or mining lease.
You must provide a copy of:
- your renewal application (not including any financial, technical or commercial-in-confidence information)
- the most recent existing compensation agreement or determination
- A guide to landholder compensation for mining claims and mining leases (PDF, 2MB).
Compensation agreements for mining claims and mining leases
Compensation for landholders needs to be settled before a renewal application for a mining lease or claim application can be granted.
If you are unable to agree on compensation, either party can refer disputes about compensation to the Land Court.
Your mining claim or lease application may be refused if you don't have a compensation agreement or haven't applied to the Land Court within 3 months of the claim or lease expiry date.
