Competency standard for petroleum and gas well drilling and well servicing review

In March 2024, we asked for feedback on the Competency standard for petroleum and gas well drilling and well servicing (PDF, 169KB). Thank you to those who shared their thoughts on its relevance and effectiveness within the industry.

Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) engaged experts from the University of Queensland (UQ) to help facilitate the review and compile your feedback into a report.

Key findings from your feedback

The report shows that the competency standard is generally well-received, with a strong call for greater flexibility within the framework. The report also outlines potential options for how we can work together to achieve the best outcome.

The feedback showed that most respondents agree the scope of activities covered by the competency standard needs to align more closely with current operational practices in well drilling, servicing, and interventions.

Next stage in the review process

We will be working closely with you to identify and prioritise any changes in early 2025. We are aiming to have a decision about what changes to make and how to make them by May 2025, and for changes to be identified by June 2025. Your input is vital to help make sure that the final outcome benefits everyone involved.

One of the changes we are considering, is broadening the scope of the competency to include all well servicing activities—however we will need to ensure any changes benefit all industry and worker safety.

Further updates on the project will be posted regularly to this page.
