Water moratorium notices

A moratorium notice specifies particular applications that will not be accepted or dealt with for its duration. These usually relate to taking water and development works that interfere with water.

The moratorium ensures that water plans are developed from a stable base by properly accounting for all existing uses. This minimises uncertainty resulting from additional development taking place during the planning process.

While a moratorium is in place, the Queensland Government strives to minimise disruption to normal farming activities. The Water Act 2000 ensures landholders continue to have access to water for stock and domestic requirements.

It is an offence under the Water Act to construct works in contravention of a moratorium notice.

Although water plans are not moratorium notices, some continue the effect of a notice.
