This flood preparation checklist will help you to prepare your business for flooding.

Knowing your business has strategies in place to help cope with a natural disaster like a flood should make it easier for your business to minimise losses, maintain business continuity and recover quickly.

Complete the list of actions to ensure your business is as prepared for a flood as possible.

You can customise this checklist to include information specific to your business by adding items to the 'Other' section.

Stock and equipment

Plan a place well above floor level where you can keep waste containers, chemicals and poisons in a flood

Organise how you will keep computers, equipment and stock off the floor

Infrastructure

Ask your local council about flood plans or records in your area

Identify the problem areas and potential flood heights (if there are any)

Install flood-proofing devices when locking up for extended periods

Set up your business in a building that has brick or tiled walls that are less likely to be damaged and are easily cleaned

Update your knowledge on what to do in the event of flooding, particularly any localised plans and arrangements that are established for your area

Insurance

Check whether there is adequate insurance to cover you in the event of a flood

Contact your insurance company to check if there are any specific preparations you need to make prior to the event

Business documentation and records

Locate and pack your critical documentation (e.g. insurance, financial, legal and identification documents) in a portable waterproof container

Back up your critical data to a portable storage device and stored it in a secure off-site location

Business continuity

Develop your business continuity plan

Clearly identify and analyse the possible risks to your business from flooding

Test and update your business continuity plan

Develop regular maintenance and review strategies for your business continuity plan

Train staff in flood response procedures and their specific roles as contained in the business continuity plan

Store a copy of your business continuity plan off-site in a safe, disaster-proof location
